Transformation in Functionalist Style

The iconic Sundt Department Store was designed by Per Grieg in a functionalist style. For us, it has been important to preserve the original architectural expression .

The seating area is sheltered by a high cornice to the north and west, protecting it from the wind. Green and lush fencing solutions frame the rooftop landscape to the south. Durable and locally sourced Norwegian materials provide a solid and lasting impression — as if the roof has always looked this way. Slate flooring and a wide variety of plants from the Norwegian flora contribute to ecological diversity, while also being harvestable and usable for food. The plant selection includes herbs, rhubarb, elder, hazel, quince, apple, pine, and a variety of lush and flowering perennials. The rooftop's cultivation area is extensive and supplies the building’s restaurant, Sann, with fresh vegetables, salad greens, herbs, and edible flowers.

Plant beds, fences, growing beds, and the slate flooring rest on a drainage layer that retains water, which the plants can utilize during dry periods. Rainwater runoff retention is a key element in modern cities to help prevent flooding peaks in the city’s overburdened drainage system. Our green roofs thus also contribute to improved management of rainwater runoff in the city.

In the heart of Western Norway’s largest city, one can now enjoy a lush garden above busy streets. We provide city dwellers with access to nature in an urban setting — along with fantastic views of the city’s seven mountains.
